Culture and Astronomy

How did cultures of past times relate to the objects seen in the heavens? How did the sky influence them and their culture? Each culture, ancient or modern, approaches the stars with a philosophy and rich set of symbols and growing set of tools. Ancient civilizations, from the Incans, to the Chaco of North America, to the builders of Stonehenge and others kept track of the Sun and could so kept time. The Sun, Moon, and stars were deified and studied in search of wisdom and understanding. More modern cultures developed elaborate techniques for navigation at sea by tracking the stars, allowing for the expansion of empires and trade. Today we find ourselves still looking up, trying to answer question of where we came from and what happens next.
