Lighthouses in the Sky

Looking out at the cosmos presents a two-dimensional view of the Universe, just as if we were looking at a photograph. In spite of this, we know that the star system Alpha Centauri is 4.4 light years away, and the distance to the Andromeda galaxy is 2.5 million light years. We’ll look at geometrical parallax, supernovae and other astronomical lighthouses, and discuss the tricks and tools used by astronomers to climb the so-called cosmological distance ladder.
