Ten Thousand Villages joins the community
Published: September 16, 2009
Ten Thousand Villages is pleased to announce its Grand Opening in Hamilton on Saturday Oct 3, 2009. The well-established fair trade organization has 51 stores across Canada, eighteen of which are now located in Ontario.
“We look forward to being a part of Locke Street in the years to come and are excited to introduce the people of Hamilton to artisans from around the world,” says Eileen Tallach, Manager of the new Ten Thousand Villages store, Hamilton.
For more than 63 years, Ten Thousand Villages has been working directly with artisans in over 35 developing countries, providing them an important market for handicrafts in North America. From coffee and chocolate to home décor and personal accessories, all products in the store are handmade, making them truly unique. Plus, unlike other retailer experiences, the knowledgeable staff and volunteers are always ready to tell more about the items and artisans who made them.
As a non-profit of Mennonite Central Committee, Ten Thousand Villages has always relied on motivated volunteers to help run their stores. “Many volunteers start with the organization in hopes of somehow ‘making a difference’,” says Lori Sager, Ontario Sales Manager for Ten Thousand Villages Canada. “And they do. Talented people from the poorest communities would have little hope in getting a fair price for their work if it weren’t for Ten Thousand Villages and all the commitment that individuals across Canada bring to it.”
